Meet Our Eco-Laminated Twill — Beautiful Fabric with a Conscience

Here at Sewing-sanctuary, we’re always looking for ways to bring you fabrics that are not just gorgeous to work with, but ones you can feel genuinely good about too. So I’m really excited to introduce you to our eco-laminated twill — a fabric that ticks so many boxes, I honestly think it might become one of your new favourites.

What Is Eco-Laminated Twill?

Let’s start with the twill itself. Twill is a classic woven fabric known for its distinctive diagonal rib — that subtle, structured texture you’ll recognise from denim, chino, and so many wardrobe staples. It has a lovely drape, a satisfying weight, and it’s wonderfully hardwearing. We love it.

Now, take that beautiful twill and add an eco-friendly laminate coating to one side, and you’ve got something really special. The laminate gives the fabric a water-resistant, wipe-clean surface, making it fantastically practical — but unlike traditional PVC-coated fabrics, our eco-laminate is free from harmful plasticisers. It’s a much kinder choice for you, your family, and the planet.

What Can You Make With It?

The combination of structure, durability, and water resistance makes eco-laminated twill a dream for all sorts of projects:

• Bags and totes — sturdy enough to hold its shape, easy to wipe down after use
• Zipped pouches and purses — the laminated surface keeps contents safe and clean
• Children’s accessories — think lunchbags, book bags, and aprons that can take whatever little ones throw at them

Sewing Tips for Eco-Laminated Twill

Laminated fabrics have their little quirks, but once you know the tricks, they’re an absolute joy to sew. Here’s what we’d suggest:

• Use a Teflon or roller foot — the laminate can stick to a standard presser foot, so swapping it out makes a world of difference
• Pin within seam allowances or use wonder clips — pins leave permanent holes in the laminate, so clip rather than pin where it’ll be visible
• Increase your stitch length — a slightly longer stitch (around 3–3.5mm) works beautifully and avoids perforating the fabric too much
• Press from the fabric side — never iron directly on the laminated surface; use a pressing cloth and a low heat if needed, or simply finger press your seams
• No need to finish seams — the laminate won’t fray, so you can leave raw edges or use flat-felled seams for a really neat finish inside your bag
