We’re thrilled to announce that double gauze cotton has arrived with us for the very first time — and it’s come all the way from Spain! Beautifully printed, soft, and full of character, this is a fabric we’ve been eager to bring in, and we think you’re going to love it just as much as we do.

What Exactly Is Double Gauze?

Double gauze is made from two layers of loosely woven cotton fabric that are lightly stitched together at intervals. The result is a fabric that has a beautiful, slightly textured appearance — a little crinkled, a little cloud-like — and a weight that feels substantial despite being incredibly airy.

Because it’s 100% cotton, it’s completely natural, gentle on the skin, and gets even softer with every wash.

Beautifully Printed, Straight From Spain

Our double gauze has been sourced from Spain, where fabric printing has a long and proud tradition. Each design has been carefully chosen to show off the fabric at its best — the slight texture of the double gauze gives printed patterns a beautiful, almost watercolour quality that you simply don’t get on a flat, tightly woven cotton.

Whether you’re drawn to bold florals, delicate geometrics, or something in between, the prints we’ve selected are designed to inspire.

Why Sewists Love It

There’s something quite special about working with double gauze. It drapes beautifully, making it ideal for garments that need a relaxed, flowing silhouette. It’s not as floppy or unruly as single-layer gauze, which means it’s much easier to cut and sew — even for less experienced makers.

A few of our favourite things about it:

  • Softness: From the very first touch, it feels gentle and luxurious. It’s particularly wonderful next to skin.
  • Breathability: The open weave allows air to circulate freely, keeping you cool in warmer weather.
  • Texture: That subtle crinkle gives finished garments a relaxed, artisan feel that looks effortlessly stylish.
  • Washability: Being 100% cotton, it’s easy to care for. It will shrink slightly on first wash, so we always recommend pre-washing your fabric before you begin.

What Can You Make With It?

Double gauze shines in warm-weather and everyday sewing projects. Here are some of our top suggestions:

For adults: Loose blouses, wrap dresses, wide-leg trousers, kimonos, and lightweight scarves all work beautifully in double gauze. Its drape lends itself to relaxed, bohemian styles.

For children: This is where double gauze truly excels. Its softness makes it a dream choice for babies and young children — think rompers, sun dresses, pyjamas, and swaddle blankets. Parents particularly love it for little ones with sensitive skin.

For the home: Double gauze makes wonderfully soft muslins, curtain panels that filter light gently, and lightweight throws.

Tips for Sewing With Double Gauze

  • Pre-wash first: Always wash and dry your fabric before cutting to account for shrinkage. Use a gentle cycle and low heat.
  • Use a sharp needle: A new, fine needle (size 70/10 or 80/12) will glide through the layers cleanly without snagging.
  • Keep seam allowances wider: A slightly wider seam allowance (1.5 cm or more) helps prevent fraying, especially on the bias.
  • Try a serger or French seams: These give beautiful, neat finishes that complement the fabric’s natural aesthetic.
  • Press gently: Use a warm iron with a pressing cloth — the loose weave can distort if handled too roughly.
